I'm not so happy with the anatomy here. Obviously it was never intended to be perfectly human, but I'm not sure that I really got the moth/human anatomy mix thing working. Oh, and please ignore the hands for now. I know they look ridiculous but they aren't finished, and I can't work on them anymore until the paint is dry. I didn't want to wait for the hands to be finished to upload the painting, though. Anyway...
When I first started out with this one, I had intended for it to be along the same lines as Cabbage Faery. It was going to just be the figure in shades of brown and white, emerging from a mist. But, I decided I wanted to mix a big splodge of red to the mist, on the right. Then I thought to add some vague leaf shapes to that red area. That turned into more leaves, then the face appeared, more leaves came...
The face... He is someone I was supposed to have drawn a couple of weeks ago, but I started painting this instead. He didn't like that, and so decided to make an appearance here, albeit a small one.
I am fascinated by moths and butterflies. They are very beautiful and graceful looking, but there's something strangely mad and chaotic about the way they fly. They flit about, in and out of sight, leading you all over the place, and it's hard to keep track of them even if you are following closely. Occasionally they will land for a few moments, flash their wings and be off again. I like that.
The top wings are modelled on the female gypsy moth, and the underneath layer is from the male.
Awesome! I was thinking about doing a moth faery type picture myself... Right now I'm working on a Feary Queen picture and It's kicking my butt! Do I sense a bit of Brian Froud in this one? Excellent work my dear!
It's in the eyes I think... Not to imply you emulate him at all, just a sprig of influence... I think he would be wowed by your work! I want to show one of my friends your work but he's in England right now working on a movie (Stardust by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess) My friend/mentor/master at times being Charles Vess... He's good friends with ole Froud... You should check out some of Charles' Paintings - [link]
And I probably will do me a moth faery... It'll be fun!
I love how you've incorporated the moth wings into her clothing and how she is so pale and powdery against the richer dark tones of the background. Beautifully done.
It's strange how a person can just slip right under the radar... I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman, Froud (obviously), and several other people this Vess bloke has worked with, yet I've never come across him before! Thank you for the link.

Froud has definitely been an influence with this piece, though I don't purposely try to emulate his work (how could I??!!).
